Overview/Population
Scottsdale is a city that is located in eastern region of Arizona. It has a population of 217,835. Scottsdale is a part of the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Scottsdale has been nicknamed The West's Most Western Town. Additionally, New York Times has referred to downtown Scottsdale as the desert version of South Beach Miami. Scottsdale is known for its buzzing hotels and late night party scene.

History
Most sources suggest that people began to settle in the Scottsdale area as early as 800 A.D. Scottsdale was once known as Vasai S-Vasoni, which meant rotting hay. Scottsdale was officially incorporated as a city in Arizona on June 25, 1951.

Geography
Scottsdale has a total land area of 184.4 square miles. Almost all of this city is made up of land. Only 0.12 percent of Scottsdale is made up of water. The city has an elevation of 1,257 ft.

Climate
Scottsdale has an arid climate. The city has extremely hot summers and mild winters. The record high in Scottsdale is 119 degrees Fahrenheit. This occurred on June 26, 1972. The record low in this city is 19 degrees Fahrenheit, which occurred on February 20, 1955. The mean temperature in the summer time is around 98 degrees, and the average temperature in the winter is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Education
The Scottsdale Unified District provides public and primary education to the Scottsdale area. Scottsdale Community College is the city's primary higher education institution. It was first established in the September of 1970. Over 10,000 students attend this school. The Scottsdale Public Library System provides Scottsdale with five libraries. It is estimated that this library system circulates around 2.5 million books, CDs, Audio books, and DVDs each year.
